Effective Mentoring in Higher Education: From Ideas to Results

April 2026, from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm, as part of the IX International Symposium “Education and the City: People and Institutions”, a roundtable entitled “Effective Mentoring in Higher Education: Approaches, Tools, Results” will be held in a hybrid format.

Mentoring is now present in almost every university — but how can we tell whether it truly works, rather than remaining a mere formality “for reporting purposes”? This question will be discussed by participants in the roundtable together with Anastasia Belolutskaya, Head of the Laboratory of Professional Competence Assessment and Adult Development, Research Institute for Urban Studies and Global Education, Moscow City University.

Key topics:

  • Which indicators genuinely reflect the effectiveness of mentoring — academic performance, engagement, career outcomes;

  • Where the boundary lies between formal support and genuine influence on personal development;

  • How to motivate mentors and assess the quality of their work without excessive bureaucracy;

  • Mentoring as a technology or as an art: which matters more.

Participants will formulate a set of practical criteria and tools for implementation in their work — from monitoring to methods of supporting mentors. This is an excellent opportunity to compare one’s own approaches with the experience of colleagues and to obtain ready-made solutions for one’s organisation.

The discussion will involve heads of mentoring laboratories at Moscow City University — practitioners working with students, young lecturers, and researchers. All those interested in the development of mentoring, personnel issues, and the shaping of the university environment are invited to participate.

The event will be held in a hybrid format. In person — at 8 Sadovaya-Samotechnaya Street, Room 28. Applications for participation are open; registration is available via this link.

Please note that several events will take place simultaneously at the indicated time. The link required for streaming access is provided in the programme. The full programme of events will soon be available on the symposium’s website.
