Educational Urbanism to be discussed at the 4th International Symposium

On August 23-24, within the framework of the 4th Annual International Symposium “Education and the City: Quality Education for Modern Cities”, the panel discussions on Educational Urbanism will be held. The sessions are organized by the Laboratory of Socio-Cultural Educational Practices at the MCU’s Research Institute of Urban Studies and Global Education. The discussion will be dedicated to comparing three concepts: “Urban Education”, “Educational Urbanism” and “Educational Urban Studies” and defining whether these concepts bring terminological confusion or potential for collaborative studies.

On August 23, at the panel discussion “Educational Urbanism: the Energy of the New Concept”, the experts from MCU and the School of Education at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI, Indiana, USA) will discuss the key concepts of Urban Education.

The discussion will touch upon the following issues:

  • Mapping the concept of urban education: why study the spatial organization of urban education?
  • Urban communities and leadership in education: why is urban community research important for the design of the schools’ learning environments and the formation of the local educational policy?
  • How to investigate the organization of the learning environments in and around urban schools?

The keynote international speakers include Brendan Maxcy (Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Development, Associate Professor at the School of Education of Indiana University-Purdue in Indianapolis), Samantha Scribner (Associate Professor at the School of Education of Indiana University-Purdue in Indianapolis), Thu Suong Nguyen (Associate Professor of Urban Education Leadership and Policy, Department Chair for Urban Education Counseling, Leadership and Policy Studies of Indiana University-Purdue in Indianapolis) and David Nguyen (Associate Professor at the School of Education of Indiana University-Purdue in Indianapolis).

Maksim Bulanov, expert of the Laboratory of Socio-cultural Educational Practices will be moderating the discussion.

On August 24 the speakers will discuss Educational Urbanism as one of the current trends in formal and non-formal education.

The keynote speakers include Konstantin Bulish (senior lecturer at the Institute of Economics, Mathematics and Information Technologies of the RANEPA and Moscow School for the Social and Economic Sciences), Natalia Pellinen (municipal coordinator for the development of work programs for education of the Krasnoyarsk Information and Methodological Center), as well as Maxim Bulanov and Anastasia Rossinskaya from the MCU’s Laboratory of Socio-Cultural Educational Practices. Head of the Laboratory Ekaterina Asonova will be moderating the discussion.
