The Moscow transportation system is a well-developed network that uses all types of underground and ground transport to connect the districts of the city.

Aeroexpress

In Moscow, there are three international airports: Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo which are connected to the city through a high-speed railway Aeroexpress. Comfortable express trains are connected to the subway stations: Belorusskaya (from Sheremetyevo International Airport), Paveletskaya (from Domodedovo International Airport), and Kievskaya (from Vnukovo International Airport). The map of Moscow Metro (subway) or Yandex. Metro App (it is available for Android and iOS) may help you in Moscow subway navigation. For example, to get to your institute or to the MCU hotel.

The price for 1 single journey in a standard class carriage is 399 rub.

The price for 1 single journey in a business class carriage is 800 rub.

There are also several mixed options that depend on the number of passengers, duration, and range of the trip.

Ground Transport

The fastest way to get to your destination is the Moscow Metro, although it can be very crowded during rush hours.

The Moscow Metro connects the city center with the industrial and residential areas and allows you to travel quickly and easily. If you do not speak Russian, the Moscow Metro can first seem complicated. Generally, there is a sign “I speak English” on the cashier’s windows. However, when you start using it, you will realise that it is very simple and convenient. Use Yandex.Metro (it is available for Android and iOS) to navigate around Moscow.

Tickets

The fare price for public transport in Russia does not depend on the distance you travel. You can buy a single ride for a particular type of transport or use travel passes (for metro and above-ground transport) to save money.

Here is an overview of the Moscow city passes:

Ediniy

Limited pass for a certain number of rides.

The price for a single ride is 61 rub.

Troika

This card can be used either as an unlimited pass valid during a certain time period or as a limited discount pass. You can buy a Troika card at cash desks of the Moscow Metro and the Moscow Central Circle, at suburban train stations, and at the Mosgortans ticket machines.

The price for a single ride by Troika is 46 rub.

In the Digital Apps section there are some apps which are very useful for navigation around the city of Moscow.

Above-Ground Transport

A bus, trolleybus, and tram network radiate from each station so that you can always choose the most convenient way for getting around. Modern taxi services, such as Yandex Taxi (for Android and iOS) and Uber (for Android and iOS, offer budget-friendly trips throughout the city. Use digital apps to learn about traffic jams in real time and look up transport schedules.

The Moscow Central Circle (MCC) is a route line of above-ground transport in Moscow. Ticketing on the Moscow Central Circle is fully integrated with the Moscow Metro; the same payment cards (such as the Troika card) can be used on both systems, and free transfers are possible within 90 minutes since the first entry into the system.

The MCCs operation hours coincide with the metro: 05:30 a.m. till 01:00 a.m.

Another way for getting around the city of Moscow is the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD), a new kind of above-ground transport based on existing suburban rail lines in Moscow and Moscow region. The ticket cost depends on travel distance, transfers from / to the metro and the MCC are free.

To travel by the MCD in “Central” zone is 46 rub.

To travel by the MCD in “Suburb” zone is 56 rub.

Free transfers are available within 90 minutes from the moment of the first ticket validation on the turnstile or the validator, the same as with the MCC. For a free transfer, tap your Troika card on the validator on a turnstile while exiting an MCD station.
