Global Perspective on Urban Studies and Education: How Cities Shape the Future

April 17, 2026, as part of the IX International Symposium “Education and the City: People and Institutions”, an international plenary session in English will be held in a hybrid format. Moderator — Anastasia Belolutskaya, Deputy Director of the Institute of Urban Studies and Global Education, Moscow City University, Head of the Laboratory for Assessment of Professional Competences and Adult Development.

Participants will discuss how educational practices and the urban environment are understood in different countries — from teacher training and language education to the role of universities in the modern world. The session will bring together international experience and reveal common challenges and approaches in a global context.

Presentations and speakers:

  • The Formation Mechanism and Cultivation Pathways of Localized Professional Capital of China Rural Teachers: An Empirical Study Based on Grounded Theory — Zhao Dan, Ma Yiming, Gao Ting (Shaanxi Normal University, China). The presentation focuses on the formation of professional capital among rural teachers in China. Based on empirical research, it examines the mechanisms of its development and possible pathways for support in the local context.

  • Cultural Awareness in EFL Learning: Learners’ Perceptions, Integration, and Challenges — Yoga Prihatin (Universitas Pancasakti Tegal, Indonesia). The presentation examines the role of cultural awareness in learning English. It analyses learners’ perceptions, methods of integrating the cultural component, and the main difficulties in the learning process.

  • Why Do We Need Universities? — Nadezhda Borodzina (Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis, Moscow). The presentation shows how the university environment shapes the professional and social skills of students and staff. Through study, excursions, film clubs, and open discussions, students develop the competencies and personal qualities that are important for life in the city and the country.
